Nice article. I would like to add in defense that sometimes those you find in expat/traveling circles might not fit your "type" at home but the fact that they are out there exploring the world makes them all the more intriguing and sexy. I love a man who is worldly and isn't afraid to leave the comforts of home to frolic in the world with me!

OK that applies to girls from the United States who are abroad for a fixed time, mostly on a 'schedule' and have little ambitions other then some 'foreign' experience well knowing they are soon back home in their old role.
Heidi is probably right [...] finding yourself maybe in different situations than you’re used to, being with different types of people, trying out different roles etc…

But seriously, everybody who comes back home and takes on the same old role as he/she/it had before and is able to mingle with the same people who stayed behind has probably missed out on the opportunity to develop his character.

Well, I def agree - to a certain extent. But there is a tendency to be with other types when abroad because THEY also look at you differently. You are allowed to play around with who you are and what your type is. I'm not trying to romanticize shagging abroad. But the article refers to expats who find themselves in very different cultures. What about moving to a country that is not that different from yours (and where you're actually able to communicate with most people), but you still end up with a very different type than in your home country? Is this also "just" companionship compulsion?? Or a result of finding yourself maybe in different situations than you're used to, being with different types of people, trying out different roles etc... (without being schizophrenic)

So essentially, for those with 'compassionship compulsion'- 'home away from home' is in bed with a fellow expat regardless or personal hygiene, bizarre personal space issues etc. Sounds about right to me. :) Great article!

Great article, Nat! I feel people are part of the 'companion compulsion' even back at home, to be honest!
